Meals on Wheels (National)
Meals on Wheels began in the United Kingdom during World War II, when many people were left without the means to cook their own meals due to bombings that destroyed homes. The Women's Volunteer Service for Civil Defense took action, delivering meals to those in need. This idea soon spread to other parts of the world, reaching the United States in 1954. The first U.S. program was established in Philadelphia, primarily aimed at elderly individuals who were homebound and unable to prepare food for themselves. Since then, Meals on Wheels has grown into a national network, serving millions of people each year. It focuses on improving the health and well-being of seniors and other vulnerable populations by providing them with nutritious meals, friendly visits, and essential safety checks.
